With so many incredibly creative cocktails out there to experience it’s funny most of us have our safe go-to drinks we tend to fall back on, and then there’s always bourbon neat or on the rocks. Well, let’s mix it up, branch out, and try something you’ve never had before. This post features seven of the best bourbon cocktails you’ve probably never had. Ask your favorite bartender or have fun experimenting at home with the ingredients and directions below.

1 Winter Berries Cocktail

Here’s a drink that’s fruity, rich, and a little on the sweet side. The dark-berry liqueur in this cocktail works well with sparkling wine in this Winter Berries mixture. The bourbon adds some heat. It’s completed with a garnish of a thin half-moon slice of lemon.

  • 3 ounces sparkling wine

  • 1 ounce bourbon

  • 1/2 ounce dark berry liqueur (such as Chambord, crème de cassis, or crème de mûre)

Add wine, bourbon, and liqueur to a wine glass filled with ice; stir gently to combine. Add a lemon slice and serve.

2 Alpine Brew

This tasty cocktail delivers a dose of caffeine that will keep you going combining bourbon, coffee liqueur, cold brew, maple syrup, and walnut bitters.

  • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon

  • 1/2 ounce coffee liqueur

  • 1/4 ounce maple syrup

  • 1 ounce cold brew

  • 2 dashes walnut bitters

Combine bourbon, coffee liqueur, maple syrup, cold brew, and walnut bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until well mixed.

Strain into a rocks glass over an ice cube and garnish with coffee beans.

3 Paper Plane

Though the Paper Plane provides a complex flavor profile without a lot of effort. It is bright and fresh but with enough umph to make it an autumn favorite.

  • Ice

  • 3/4 ounce bourbon

  • 3/4 ounce Nonino Quintessentia amaro (bittersweet Italian liqueur)

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the remaining ingredients and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe.

4 Shadow Woman

This Old-Fashioned–style cocktail gets a fruity flavoring from pear brandy and just a touch of sweetness from honey; the bourbon adds a bite without overpowering the rest of the ingreedinets. Pear brandy is a very aromatic and unsweetened liquor made from fermented pears.

  • 3 tablespoons (1 1/2oz.) bourbon

  • 1 tablespoon (1/2 oz.) pear brandy

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • Ice cubes

  • 1 large ice cube

  • 1 orange peel twist

Combine bourbon, brandy, honey, and bitters in a mixing glass, fill the mixing glass nearly to the top with ice cubes. Gently stir mixture until well combined, chilled, and diluted, 20 to 30 seconds. Pour mixture through a cocktail strainer into a rocks glass over a single large ice cube. Garnish with orange and lemon peel twists and serve.

5 Withering Sunrise

This bourbon and puréed mango mixture make an irresistible pairing you won’t want to miss.

  • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon (such as Witherspoon’s)

  • 1 ounce puréed mango

  • 1/2 ounce agave nectar

  • 2 lemon wedges

  • 2 ounces IPA

Combine bourbon, pureed mango, agave nectar, and juice from 2 lemon wedges in shaker filled with ice.

Shake hard and strain into highball glass over 1 large ice cube.

6 Milk Punch

Milk punch is a classic cocktail, but how many of us have ever experienced this creamy concoction from the days of old. This one is a real hearth-warmer on a cold winter evening.

  • 2 ounces bourbon

  • 3 ounces whole milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 ounce simple syrup

  • 1 pod star anise (for garnish)

Add all ingredients into an ice filled shaker and shake until chilled.

Strain into a rocks glass and garnish with grated nutmeg and star anise.

7 In Cold Blood

Here’s a cocktail with attitude infusing the bitterness of the artichoke-flavored aperitif Cynar and then balancing it with salt.

  • 1 ounce rye whiskey, such as Old Overholt

  • 1 ounce Carpano Antica Formula or other sweet vermouth

  • 1 ounce Cynar

  • 1 large ice cube

In a chilled double rocks glass, combine the whiskey, vermouth and Cynar. Add the large ice cube and stir well. Pinch the lemon twist over the drink and add to the glass. Garnish with the pinch of salt.
